2017 Ron Holt Civic Engagement Award

On Thursday, April 20, I had the honor and privilege of presenting the annual Ron Holt Civic Engagement Award to a graduating senior at Wayne State College (WSC) in Wayne, NE.

The award was created to showcase a graduating WSC senior who has served as an exemplary role model and contributed to the service ethos of the college campus and community at large during their college career. Selected students must have participated in at least one Service‐Learning academic or co‐curricular project/event while at WSC and have maintained good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher while in college.

All of the applications received were excellent making the committee’s decision a very difficult one.

In addition to receiving a certificate and a ribboned medallion, the winner of this year’s award received a glass trophy along with an gift of $500. The winner was also recognized during graduation commencement May 6, 2017.

The three finalists each received a certificate, a ribboned medallion, and a glass trophy along with a gift of $250.

The winner of this year’s award is James Branstetter (second from left). James is a Geography/Geospatial Technologies and History major from Magnolia, Iowa. He volunteered for roadside and tornado clean up, helped with the Nebraska State Geographic Bee, and raised funds for the Festival of Trees.

The three finalists were Allison Backer (third from left), Alexandria Bartels (third from right) and Patrick Meuret (second from right).

Allison is a Business and Office Administration & Human Resources Management major from Randolph, NE. She volunteered to help raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and assisted with the campus freshman move-in day.

Alexandria is a Criminal Justice major with minors in Pre-Law and Sociology from LaVista, NE. She helped raise funds for Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol and for the Tenderhearted Animal Rescue and Sanctuary.

Patrick is an Applied Human and Sports Physiology major from Norfolk, NE. He volunteered at the mobile food bank and traveled to Mexico and Colombia on two spring break mission trips.

It was such an honor to recognize such amazing stewards of Service-Learning and civic engagement.
